After some agonizing, I discarded my plan to get a 2024 Toyota Tacoma SR5. At this point in time, Tacos are being bought up quickly and none of the local dealers were willing to go below MSRP. Instead, I picked up a discounted RAV XLE Premium with gas engine and AWD. I'm still getting used to it and my comparison point is a 2019 Golf R (which I love dearly).
1. Ride- comfortable but acceleration is a bit anaemic.
2. Steering is on the heavy side but may have the benefit of isometric toning.
3. Adjustable driver's seat - not as adjustable as the Golf R and just not as comfortable despite muliple stabs at adjusting it for vision, safety, and comfort.
4. Display- takes a long time to boot up and is ugly. It's also dangerous to try and use it while driving so I set it up before I start moving.
5. Brakes are spongy but then I drive this thing like a truck and not like a sports car.
6. Data port- a single USB-A port with limited reasoning power. I couldn't get it to work and finally figured out that it doesn't like APFS formatted USB-sticks. So I had to reformat with Master Boot Record and MS-DOS FAT. To me, this is digital stone age stuff. A major dislike and I sense the ghastly hand of some Windows type behind it.
7. USB-C charging ports. Not very useful to me given the wireless charging pad and I don't use this vehicle as a familymobile even thought it may signal what one of my friends refers to as, "married with children'.
8. Controls- I'm still getting used to them. Not as nice and pretty as the Golf.
9. Mileage better than the Golf.
10. Suitability for National Park type travel- excellent.
11- Luggage space - plenty
12. Electronic connected services- I dislike these and am waiting for the free trial to be over. None of them are useful. I do not trust car manufacturers not to sell driver data. I'll dump the Toyota app soon too.
13. Looks - not as macho as the Tacoma but it isn't as ugly as other SUVs. I'll get used to it.
14. Rear facing camera- very good view.
15. Serves the purpose overall. The excitement factor decays rapidly after 48 hours.
